Nearly 400 public health doctors have joined the revolt against the government’s Health Bill. Writing in a letter to the Telegraph they say health secretary Andrew Lansley’s plans will cause the NHS ‘irreparable harm’ (scroll down this page for the full letter and all the signatories).

Change4Life: a ‘lifestyle revolution’. But is it enough?

‘Change4Life’ is what the government is calling its latest campaign to persuade us all to eat more healthily and do more exercise.

It isn’t simply a series of adverts, however, as public health minister Dawn Primarolo was keen to stress at the launch of the initiative. Taking a leaf out of Marks and Spencer’s guide to seductive description, she said: ‘This is not just an ad campaign launch. January sees the launch of the whole change for life movement.’

How to catch the happiness bug

Apparently, there is something just as infectious as MRSA but less regularly found in NHS hospitals: happiness.

Research recently published on bmj.com states that happiness rubs off. It argues that happiness is not just an individual experience or choice, but depends on the happiness of others to whom individuals are connected directly and indirectly. The findings suggest that clusters of happiness result from the spread of happiness and not just a tendency for people to associate with similar individuals.
