I don’t quite know what I was expecting when I arrived at Church House in Westminster yesterday for the afternoon session of the Pathfinder Listening and Learning Network Event. But it certainly wasn’t the full backing for GP-led, or whisper it, ‘clinical’ commissioning that I heard.

Does anyone think GPs shouldn’t be more involved with patient care?

I’ve been interviewing GP consortia representatives over the last fortnight and have been interested by their reaction to the government’s listening exercise.

Does it mean months off putting their feet up in the sunshine? Well, as appealing as that thought might be given the current weather, the answer is no, quite the opposite, actually. More a case of ‘heads down and let’s get on with business’.

New role for Professor Steve Field tests relationship of last two RCGP leaders

The expected new role for Professor Steve Field in leading the Health Bill review looks set to test the relationship of the last two chairs of the RCGP.

Professor Field, RCGP chairman until last year, memorably called for restraint ahead of the BMA’s special representative meeting last month.

It takes a brave man or woman to shout from the rooftops of
general practice that the profession should take back control of 24-hour care.

But that’s what the chairman of the RCGP has done, and he’s
right to do so. This is a question that GPs need to ask themselves now, because
one way or another it will soon be asked of them – either by a new Conservative
government or a re-elected Labour administration.

Internet drugs: right or right now?

RCGP chairman Professor Steve Field blogs on the BBC news website today about the dangers of internet drugs.

He references an exclusive GP story this summer which found that one in four GPs have treated patients for adverse reactions to medicines they have bought online.
