How do you Rate Your PCT?

Do you feel overwhelmed by the number of bodies dreaming up different ways to rate your work and that of your practice?

Schemes include the QOF, balanced scorecards, revalidation, practice accreditation and registration with the health watchdog the Care Quality Commission. Even NHS Choices is having a bash.

Does anyone remember the reassuring phrase ‘high-trust, low bureaucracy’ that was used to usher in the new GMS contract in 2004?

Doesn’t that seem a million miles away now? Perhaps ‘low-trust, high bureaucracy’ would be a better description of the regime we are now hurtling towards.

Four weeks ago columnist Dr Chris Lancelot argued that now was the time to turn the tables and for GPs to rate their PCTs.

Such was the positive reaction to the idea, particularly on Healthcare Republic, that we have made that dream reality.

The scorecard will be UK-wide. We anticipate that GPs in Wales and Northern Ireland will have much to say after GP reported last week that NHS reorganisation had left primary care in both countries in ‘chaos’.

GPC chairman Dr Laurence Buckman points out in this week’s GP that PCT rating mechanisms had ‘almost never’ reflected GP views.

Let us allow you to put that right and give you a voice.

The NHS Confederation, which represents managers, is even eagerly awaiting your feedback.

We are also committed to making the exercise fair and seek also to shine a light on good managerial practice as well as exposing the bad.

All we ask of you is your help. Please go to healthcarerepublic.com/survey to tell us what you think. Spread the word. Tell your LMC. Encourage neighbouring practices to take part.

For this to be a valuable piece of work, and perhaps one we can repeat in the future, we would like the participation of as many GPs and practices as possible.

Very little support. Overly bureaucratic and difficult to contact.
