Do GPs and nurses have a responsibility to get swine flu jabs?
An exclusive Healthcare Republic poll receiving national coverage today found that many GPs may refuse swine flu jabs.
A poll last week of nurses found that a third would refuse vaccination, while Healthcare Republic reports today unhappiness that pharmacists and receptionists will not be at the front of the queue. Perhaps something becomes more desirable when it is denied?
Professor David Salisbury, the DoH’s director of immunisation, told HCR that healthcare workers had a duty to be vaccinated.
However, blogger NHS Blog Doctor argues that the swine flu immunisation is being rushed out and its efficacy is uncertain.
I think that the DoH must now make the case for immunisation. If GPs and nurses don’t want jabs, why should the public? No-one is suggesting that swine flu jabs should be mandatory for healthcare workers but now is the time for experts, including England’s CMO Sir Liam Donaldson, to convince the sceptics.
Will you have a swine flu jab this winter? If not, what would the DoH have to do to convince you?
